Alliums Care

Alliums are a member of the onion family and are often referred to as ornamental onions which are grown in gardens for their spectacular flower heads.

The sperical flower heads are made up of masses of cluster forming star like flowers in varying shades of blue, lilac, pink, purple, red and white.

Alliums come in many shapes and sizes from dainty flowers ideal for rockery gardens and spring bedding to the giant majestic blooms that can reach 200cm in the garden.

The tall varieties prefer sunny sights in borders, beds, open areas, drought conditions and formal bedding.

Wild garlic, Allium ursinum is a UK native plant that enjoys shaded areas in woodlands, under trees, shady gardens, around perennials and shrubs. The strong garlic odour attracts bees and insects.

Once flowering is complete, the dried seed heads create an attractive feature and can be used in dried flower arrangements.

Growing Guide

Plant in well drained soil in either a sheltered or open sunny site. They will thrive in sandy soil and drought conditions. Planting depths vary, large bulbs should be 20cm deep when planted.

During late summer, larger clumps can be devided and replanted to stop overcrowding.

Alliums are generally free from disease. However, in really wet conditions can be vunerable to downy mildew and white rot.
